Just off the main beach at Mount Maunganui, you will find Moturiki Island—sometimes called Leisure Island. This island was home to early Maori settlers, who built traditional terraced Pa, and enjoyed the rich bounty from the ocean and the volcanic soil that characterises this area.
The island is sometimes called Leisure Island because from 1966-1981, it sported a water-fun amusement park. The island has been reclaimed as a natural landmark, and visitors now walk the man-made land bridge from the main beach across to the island to enjoy the unique vantage point, native bush and rocky outcrops.
A blowhole is active at high tide, only a 20-minute walk off the beach. This walk is not taxing and could be called a leisurely stroll—great for when the grandkids visit while you enjoy the best sustainable senior living Tauranga has to offer.
Near to our retirement village in Papamoa are the bustling Tauranga city centre and the Mt Maunganui eateries. This is seafood heaven; the wine list is well thought out and mixes beautifully with the outlook as the sun sparkles on the water—or sets as you enjoy a bite with friends.
Latitude 37 is a favourite at Mount Maunganui, just a hop, skip, and a jump from your sustainable senior living Tauranga home. You can eat here all day, and at night, you can enjoy a classic fish and chips, coconut curry and a cocktail.
